Enoch: A Father’s Prayer Legacy
God our Father longs for fellowship with us, and deep inside we all have the empty spot that only He can fill. After we sample the delights He has for us, we long for that intimacy with Him, as well. Enoch had such a relationship with God. As a result of Enoch’s prayer walks with God, his children for many generations were blessed. Enoch’s faith was not only an example to Methuselah (his son), but to ancient Christians and to us, too.
Enoch was so close to God that one day (at 365 years old) he went walking with the Father, and God took him and he was no more. See Genesis 5:24. Enoch was also mentioned as a man of faith in Hebrews 11:5-6. Enoch pleased God, and as a result He did not die.
Enoch was the son of Jared, seven generations from Adam. He was born 622 years after Adam was created, so it is conceivable that as a child he would listen to his great…grandpa talk about his walks in the Garden of Eden with the Father. Grandpa Adam could have influenced Enoch’s faith and inspired him to seek God daily in the more than 300 years they shared together.
Enoch’s legacy of faith reached through many centuries, even to the time of Christ. Not only was he described in Hebrews, but Jude also quoted from the writings of Enoch in Jude 14-15.
His name has two meanings. First, Enoch means dedicated, consecrated, and experienced. Second, it means to instruct or to initiate. Enoch dedicated himself to walk with God and to know the Father. He was an experienced man of faith. As a result God instructed him on matters of eternal significance. Imagine what your prayer life would be like if you took a walk with the Father every day for over 350 years. You would develop a close friendship like Enoch had with God.
Even though his mention is brief in the Bible, we can learn a few things from this great patriarch. We must dedicate ourselves to the call of God. If we neglect our prayer time for too long, our ears will get clogged up and we won’t be able to hear God’s voice. We must discipline ourselves to walk daily with Him. He longs for that fellowship with us, and when we taste of that intimacy, we will also long for more from our Heavenly Father.
- Intercessory prayer is more than just bringing a wish list to God. It is developing a relationship with Him so that the communication is a dialogue. He can direct your prayer time and tell you how to pray specifically. He can fill up your spirit when you feel empty. He will listen when we need to talk. And, when we listen, He can give wisdom and comfort and revelation. Let God search your heart and direct your prayer time.
- Like Enoch, we must seek to please God. He pleased God, because of his heart to seek God. He didn’t build a great empire, he was no king, he didn’t make a fortune, and he didn’t conquer nations. He was a friend of God.
- Our daily walk with God can affect many generations that follow us. The legacy we leave will affect our children and grandchildren for many generations. Imagine spending time with God each day, allowing Him to search your heart, becoming so intimate with Him that you know His heart, communicating that love to your children, and passing on a legacy of intimacy with the Creator. Like ripples in a pond, our prayer walk affects the masses around us.
Somewhere along the way we realize that the Father is not leading us to a specific place, but to Himself. He is our destination. Intimacy with Him is our call. ♥
